The Ketu North Municipal Assembly successfully observed the 41st National Farmers’ Day at the Dekpor M/A Basic School premises. Held under the national theme, “FEED GHANA, EAT GHANA, SECURE THE FUTURE,” the colourful event celebrated the hard work of farmers while addressing critical issues regarding food security and local economic growth.

The event was well-attended by key dignitaries and stakeholders, including the Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Coordinating Director, the Municipal Director of Agriculture, the revered Traditional Leaders of Dekpor, the support and presence of Assembly staff, the security agencies, the media, and the public.

In the keynote address, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) highlighted a critical challenge facing the nation: the annual expenditure of over US$2 billion on food imports. The MCE noted that a growing preference for imported rice, chicken, and processed foods—often driven by misplaced perceptions of status—weakens the demand for quality local produce and suppresses farm-gate prices.

To support this vision, the Assembly outlined several ongoing government interventions aimed at boosting agricultural productivity in the Municipality. These include:

• The rehabilitation of the Weta Irrigation Scheme.
• The “Feed Ghana” and “Feed the Industry” initiatives.
• Enhanced local procurement under the School Feeding Programme.
• Institutional farming in Senior High Schools.
• Subsidized mechanization and the establishment of Farmers’ Service Centers.
• The Poultry Value Chain Enhancement Programme (“Nkoko Nketenkete”).
