The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) recently launched its first-ever municipal office in Dzodze, Ketu North Municipality, Volta Region, Ghana. This significant step aims to decentralize environmental governance, bringing crucial services closer to local communities. The initiative was a joint effort between the EPA and the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Hon. Eric Edem Agbana.
The new office is a major milestone for Ghana’s environmental management, especially for areas grappling with pressing ecological issues like sand winning. EPA CEO Professor Nana Ama Klutse emphasized that the establishment of the Dzodze office aligns with the Authority’s mandate under the Environmental Protection Act, enabling it to better serve local communities. She noted that the office will simplify access to EPA services, such as obtaining environmental permits, a process previously cumbersome for many local businesses.
The inauguration ceremony saw a diverse attendance, including Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, Hon. Eric Edem Agbana, Hon. Reverend Martin Amenaki (Municipal Chief Executive), Mr. Jasper Adenyo (Municipal Coordinating Director), traditional chiefs and queen mothers, municipal assembly staff, assembly members, students from local schools, and members of the public. This broad representation highlights the community’s and stakeholders’ commitment to improved environmental oversight in the region.
